Meet Brenda Tjaden and Teresa Faidley of Professional Hair Designers in Downtown Colfax! They’re two of the many friendly faces you’ll find in Downtown Colfax’s business community! Brenda has owned and operated Professional Hair Designers (PHD) for 10 years with Teresa’s help as the salon manager. You’ll also occasionally see hairstylists Tommi Terpstra and Brenda Hysell providing their skilled services to local customers at PHD. If you do the math, the four hair stylists have a combined 118 years of experience! We think this definitely earns them the title of ‘professional’ in their namesake and customers should know that they are in very skilled hands!
Professional Hair Designers is a full service hair salon that offers cuts, coloring, and perms. The salon provides tanning and waxing services as well. They also sell an array of hand selected hair care products. Appointments for hair styling or other services can be made over the phone at 515-674-3655 or in person if you stop in while the salon is open! The salon is located in one of Downtown Colfax’s historic buildings on West Howard Street known as ‘Fellows Row’. This Italianate building was built to house a local fraternal organization called the Knights of Pythias hall upstairs, while the downstairs held a bakery, a furniture store, a television store, and a doctor’s office at various times before becoming a salon. The First Baptist Church of Colfax had their first meetings upstairs before they moved to their current location in 1891. The salon’s building and storefront underwent a historically sensitive renovation in 2012-2013 which gave the salon’s storefront its charming appearance!
Both Brenda and Teresa have been lifelong residents of Colfax and told us that their favorite thing about being local hair stylists is that they get to meet and become friends with people of all walks of life that live in our community. It’s been fun for them to get to know everyone in town and build valued client relationships. They also enjoy the opportunities to get involved in the community and all the local Downtown Colfax events such as The Halloween Walk and Colfax Country Christmas. Last year they won the ‘Best Booth’ award for The Halloween Walk with their awesome and over-the-top ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ theme! Brenda and Teresa also love holiday decorations! This last Christmas they had a rotating Christmas tree in their window!
